Tax Credits & Rebates

Tax Credits & Rebates for Energy Efficient Air Conditioning Units

San Antonio, Texas residents have a variety of options to consider when looking for ways to reduce their heating and cooling costs, as well as all energy usage. Improving your home’s energy efficiency can significantly reduce your heating and cooling costs, and help contribute to reducing the carbon footprint your home has on the environment. Below are some of the options available in the san Antonio area for AC tax rebates and credits.

CPS Energy
One of the best ways to get tax rebates and savings is to turn to CPS Energy. The energy company provides various energy saving rebates including these, all of which you can apply to directly through CPS Energy.
Air Conditioner Rebates: The amount of the rebate is dependent on the overall seasonable energy efficiency rating ratio (SEER), with central units having at least a 15.0 rating. This upgrade applies to home improvement or retrofit projects only and must be installed by a licensed HVAC contractor.
Heat Pump Rebates: Replacing your electric water heater with a qualified heat pump can help you qualify for a rebate. For 40 to 49 gallon tanks, this is a $200 credit. An 80-gallon tank can provide a $300 rebate, with other options in between. To qualify, the Energy Star heat pump needs to have an energy factor of 2.2 at a minimum and at least a five year warranty from the manufacturer. It must be permanently installed and be compliant with all local, state, and national codes.
Federal Solar Photovoltaic Rebates: For those hoping to install a solar PV system, rebates may still be available through CPS. They are available at the federal level as well. These must be installed by a registered solar contractor to qualify.

CPS Energy also provides rebates for air flow, attic insulation, green shade trees, new construction projects, pool pumps, and refrigerator recycling.
New Braunfels Utilities
New Braunfels Utilities offers a rebate for those residents who install a split system air conditioning unit and/or a heat pump that has a minimum SEER rating of 16 or, if installing a packaged air and heat pump system, a 15 SEER rating. The available rebate is between $250 and $500 depending on the SEER rating installed. Apply directly at New Braunfels Utilities.
Pedernales Electric Cooperative
The Pedernales Electric Cooperative provides an HVAC rebate program, however, at the time of this writing in 2015, all allocated funds for the program were exhausted. The organization may offer additional incentives for 2016.
Federal Tax Credits
Although the state of Texas and city of San Antonio do not offer a rebate directly, there are opportunities available through the federal government. Tax credits for tax year 2015 include those for the installation of geothermal heat pumps, solar energy systems, fuel cells, and small wind turbines used in residential settings.

The availability of these funds, as well as the amount of the rebate or tax incentive, is provided through the Energy Star Program. For 2015, a tax credit of 30% of the cost with no upper limit is provided. This expires in December of 2016. It applies to existing homes and new construction, both primary homes and second homes.
